Hammerwork Ring in 18K Yellow Gold with Black Diamonds: How Old Gold Becomes Bespoke Fine Jewelry

Not every piece of jewelry begins with new gold.

Sometimes, the most valuable material is the gold that already carries a personal story. Family heirlooms, cherished rings, or jewelry that is no longer worn can be given an entirely new life while preserving both their value and their meaning.

That was exactly the idea behind this project.

The client came to Marchioness Jewelry Boutique—an independent jewelry atelier in Toronto—with several old 18K yellow gold rings. Instead of purchasing new gold, he wanted to use his own precious metal to create a contemporary men’s ring that would fully reflect his personal style and character.

Why Melting the Gold Is Only the Beginning

Once the original gold has been melted, the most demanding part of the work begins.

The metal is carefully prepared, the required amount of material is calculated, and the new ring is handcrafted according to the client’s exact finger size.

The jeweler then builds the structure of the ring, precisely fits every element, and performs traditional soldering to create a strong and durable foundation for the finished piece.

The Hammerwork Technique

The defining feature of this ring is the Hammerwork technique.

Using a specialized jeweler’s hammer, the surface of the ring is textured entirely by hand. This distinctive finish cannot be replicated through mass production. It creates depth, interacts beautifully with light, and gives the piece its bold architectural character.

It is details like these that transform an ordinary ring into true Bespoke Fine Jewelry.

Setting the Natural Black Diamonds

Once the metalwork is complete, the process moves to Diamond and Gemstone Setting.

Working under a microscope, the jeweler carefully sets natural black diamonds along the centerline of the ring at perfectly even intervals, preserving flawless symmetry, precise stone placement, and complete visual harmony throughout the design.

Microscope-assisted craftsmanship allows the level of precision required for fine jewelry of the highest standard.

The Final Finishing Process

After the diamonds have been set, the ring undergoes a complete luxury finishing process.

Professional polishing, meticulous cleaning, detailed quality inspection, and final preparation ensure that every surface meets the highest standards before the piece is presented to the client.

It is this uncompromising attention to detail at every stage that defines true Luxury Handmade Jewelry. In projects like this, the value lies not only in the finished piece, but also in every step of the journey—from the first grams of gold to the completed ring.

At Marchioness Jewelry Boutique, we create Custom Jewelry Toronto, Bespoke Fine Jewelry, and provide expert Diamond and Gemstone Setting, combining traditional hand craftsmanship, the latest jewelry technologies, and exclusively natural diamonds and precious gemstones.
