Jewelry Redesign: How a Yellow Diamond Ring Took on an Entirely New Character

You can preserve the gold. You can preserve the diamond. And still create an entirely different piece of jewelry.

This is one of the most fascinating possibilities of Jewelry Redesign.

This project at Marchioness Jewelry Boutique began with an existing 18K yellow gold ring featuring a cushion-cut yellow diamond at its center, surrounded by a halo of natural white diamonds, with additional white diamonds pavé-set along both sides of the band.

The client wanted to preserve the central composition and the gold from the original piece while completely changing the character of the ring.

And so began a process in which the essential elements of the existing piece became the starting point for creating something entirely new.

Preserving What Matters

The first stage of a redesign like this requires exceptional precision.

The diamonds from the side pavé are carefully removed and preserved. The central composition — the cushion-cut yellow diamond together with its surrounding halo of natural white diamonds — is then precisely separated from the original band.

The goal is not simply to dismantle an existing piece, but to preserve the elements that will become part of the new work without compromising their integrity.

The central composition remains.

Everything around it will be created anew.

When Old Gold Becomes a New Ring

The remaining 18K yellow gold is melted down.

From this point forward, the original form of the ring no longer determines the final result. The same gold becomes the material from which an entirely new band is created.

This is where one of the possibilities of professional Jewelry Redesign becomes especially clear: the value and history of an existing piece can be preserved without preserving its original aesthetic.

The gold remains.
The diamond remains.
The character changes completely.

Hammerwork: A New Character for the Metal

For the new ring, the client chose hammerwork.

Once the new band is formed, its surface is worked with a specialized jeweler’s hammer. Gradually, a distinctive texture emerges directly in the metal, becoming part of the artistic language of the new ring.

This completely changes the way the piece is perceived.

In the original version, the pavé of white diamonds played a significant visual role. In the new ring, the yellow gold surface itself creates the expression.

Hammerwork gives the metal depth and individuality while allowing the central yellow diamond to remain the primary focus of the composition.

Bringing the Old and New Together

Once the new band has been formed, one of the most precise stages of the process begins.

The ring is prepared to receive the preserved central composition. Its position and proportions must be precisely established in relation to the new structure before the centerpiece is carefully installed and soldered into place.

The objective is not simply to connect two elements.

The transition between them must feel so natural that the original central composition and the newly created band are perceived as one complete piece of jewelry.

This is the moment when the old and the new finally become one.

Final Finishing

Once all the elements have been joined, the final refinement begins.

The surfaces are meticulously finished, the ring is polished and cleaned, and the connections, proportions, and quality of execution are carefully inspected.

At the same time, it is essential to preserve the character of the hammerwork texture: the final finishing should enhance the surface of the metal without diminishing the depth and expression created within it.

Only after all of these stages are complete does the final result reveal itself.

The same 18K yellow gold.
The same yellow diamond.
An entirely different ring.

Jewelry Redesign: Preserving Value, Changing Character

For us, Jewelry Redesign is not simply about altering an existing piece.

It is about understanding what is truly worth preserving — the gold, diamonds, gemstones, or individual elements of the piece — and creating something new around them with a different character and aesthetic.

At Marchioness Jewelry Boutique, an independent jewelry atelier in Toronto, we bring together artistic vision, jewelry craftsmanship, and modern jewelry technologies in our Custom Jewelry Toronto, Luxury Handmade Jewelry, Jewelry Redesign, and Diamond & Gemstone Setting projects.

Every project like this begins with an existing piece of jewelry, but its final result is defined by a new vision and the quality of its execution.

If you have a ring or another piece of jewelry you no longer wear but would like to preserve its gold, diamonds, or gemstones, contact Marchioness Jewelry Boutique to discuss an individual redesign project.
