Resizing an 18K White Gold Diamond Ring: How to Preserve Its Original Beauty
A client recently brought this 18K white gold ring set with natural diamonds to our jewelry atelier with a simple request: increase the ring size while preserving its original appearance.
Although resizing a ring may sound straightforward, work of this level requires far more than simply adding a small section of gold. Once the process is complete, the ring should look exactly as it did before — only in a new size. There should be no visible evidence that it was ever altered.
That was the standard we set for this project.
Why Ring Resizing Is One of the Most Challenging Jewelry Repairs
Many people assume that enlarging a ring is a relatively simple procedure. In reality, it is one of the most demanding operations in fine jewelry, especially when working with 18K white gold and natural diamonds.
Any modification to a ring affects its geometry, proportions, and overall appearance. If the work is not performed with absolute precision, the solder joint may become visible, the ring may lose its perfect symmetry, or the finish may differ in texture, color, or brilliance.
For this reason, professional ring resizing is not simply a repair—it is a form of jewelry restoration where every detail matters.
How We Resized This 18K White Gold Ring
The process begins with accurately measuring the ring's original size.
To enlarge the ring, we fabricate a section of 18K white gold matching the original alloy. The new piece is carefully rolled by hand to the exact thickness and width required, allowing it to become a seamless continuation of the original shank once installed.
After precise fitting, the ring is enlarged to the required size, and the new section is soldered into place with exceptional accuracy.
Although natural diamonds are highly resistant to heat and allow this type of work to be carried out safely, we always choose the most conservative approach. During soldering, the section of the ring containing the mounted diamonds remains under water. This minimizes heat exposure and provides an additional level of protection not only for the gemstones, but also for our client's jewelry.
The Real Craftsmanship Begins After Soldering
This is the stage that separates an ordinary jewelry repair from true bench craftsmanship.
Once the soldering is complete, we restore the ring's original geometry, refine its perfect symmetry, eliminate every trace of the work performed, and carefully recreate the surface so that the resized section becomes completely undetectable.
The ring then undergoes a professional multi-stage polishing process, thorough cleaning, and a final rhodium plating. The rhodium finish restores the brilliant white color, exceptional luster, and flawless appearance characteristic of high-quality white gold jewelry.
The Final Result
After every stage of the restoration was completed, the ring had its new size while fully preserving its original proportions, elegance, and character. Without knowing its history, it would be impossible to tell that the ring had ever been resized.
When a job is done properly, the only thing people notice is the beauty of the jewelry itself. They should never notice that it has been altered.
That is what we believe true jewelry craftsmanship is all about.
